A small town girl in a big city world
It's a small world after all
When I decided to leave the small metropolis of Moncton for a bigger
city, my friends thought I was crazy. They couldn't understand why I'd
want to move to such a big city. If they only knew how small this big
city really is!
My first day aboard the OC transpo buses proved very nerve-racking for
me. I can count the number of buses in Moncton on my fingers and PEI is
just now entering the world of public tranportation. I "travel-planned"
my route on the trusty transpo website, and was on my way. I'm sure I looked like a frightened animal that day, darting my eyes from side to side hoping I wouldnt miss my crucial stop in order to transfer buses. I fearfully asked the sharer of my seat to help me in locating the Queensway, being sure to mention that I was a Maritimer and that I was a first timer on the transpo.
A handsome stranger couldnt help but overhear my last statement, as I was riding the 95, which is the most crowded bus in all the land. He proceeded to tell me he was also from the Eastern Shores, in fact a PEIslander, and as he kindly helped me find my way to the Queensway, I found out that his sister is married to a high school acquaintance of mine!! What???!!
After that day I began to realize how small the world really is. A co-worker of mine told me a story about a lady who moved here from Scotland, and when meeting my cooworkers father she proceeded to tell him of a friend who had also moved here years ago. Lo and behold she was talking to her friends son!
I began to think that these chance encounters are ways of reminding us that home isnt so far away afterall. When I feel homesick, something always seems to happen to cure me of it. I've been here in Ottawa for exactly 2 months and I've already met an Islander on a bus, ran into a high school friend in a restaurant and met 2 university friends on the street at different times.
A study was recently done to determine the song that stuck in most peoples heads most often. It comes to no surprise to me that "It's a small world " took the cake. Most likely because it is indeed a very small world.
